An East Yorkshire restaurant owner has taken 35 of his full-time staff members on holiday to Tenerife as a reward for their hard work over the last year.
Sumo Pan Asian director and head-chef, Gary Chin, said 2022 had been challenging for everyone given the cost of living crisis. Going into the new year, he wanted to reward his full-time employees, which consist of chefs and the management team.
Mr Chin owns three restaurants across Hessle and Beverley where they serve authentic and innovative dishes from Japan, Malaysia and Thailand. In 2022, he opened a second restaurant in Beverley town centre, following the success of his Flemingate restaurant.
He first started out with a much smaller restaurant on Newland Avenue in Hull ten years ago. Since then, their business has expanded and prospered and Gary wants his staff to be a part of that success.
He said: “I can’t say that other employers should do the same. I just do what I can do. At the moment the whole economy is not great, and it has been a difficult year.
“I am just trying my best to treat them and hope that in return they would be good to me as well.”
The staff members will be in Tenerife, Spain for four days from Monday, January 9 to Thursday, January 12. Mr Chin said he forked out almost £600 for each of his staff members to be there.
This is not the first time Mr Chin has taken his staff on holiday. In fact, he says this has been something he has done for the past ten years, and something he continues to do for years to come.
