KELI: A Work in Progress Sharing

1 September @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Freedom Festival present KELI: A Work in Progress Sharing

Ivor Novello winning composer Martin Green (Lau) and Director Emma Rice (Wise Children, Kneehigh) are spending a week in Hull transforming Martin Green’s audio drama KELI into a work for stage.

The story follows a prodigiously talented, but highly volatile teenager who plays in a brass band. A story of the power of music, community and post-industry. Keli might be the best, but can she keep a lid on it long enough to make it to the top?

KELI was born out of a year of research into brass band communities across the UK for Martin Green’s highly acclaimed series “Love, Spit and Valve Oil” for BBC Radio 4. The stories he gathered of heart-break, friendship and survival, became the remarkable characters that populate this piece. A foul-mouthed teenager, a mother who has difficulty coping with modern life, and a hundred-and-fifty year old Marxist all have a part to play.

This is a chance to come into the rehearsal room with two of the country’s most respected creatives working together for the first time.

A work in progress sharing will present sections of the play, and be followed by a Q&A.
