Gym owner Mike Gibbons to lead the fight for Orchard Park in local elections

“Our area deserves a strong local voice to fight for them”

Local boxing club owner, Mike Gibbons, has thrown his hat in the ring for this year’s local Hull City Council elections in May and is standing for the Liberal Democrats in Orchard Park.

Mike, who lives locally in HU6, is well known in the community and across Hull as the person who set up the City of Hull Boxing Club at the former Housing Offices on Orchard Park Road. Hundreds of people right across the city have learned to box at his gym, where he is the Chairman, including several national and regional champions.

Now, Mike will be taking the fight to his Labour opponents at May’s Hull City Council elections. Orchard Park has never elected a party other than Labour and currently has three Labour Councillors.

At the elections, Mike and the Orchard Park Lib Dem team will be campaigning hard on tackling crime following the ongoing crime surge on the estate. He’ll also be standing up for local services like the NHS, public transport and Education.

Mike Gibbons has said in light of recent issues on crime and anti-social behaviour that it’s “time for a change”. Recently, under the Lib Dems, Hull City Council announced they would be doubling the Crime Prevention Fund from £250,000 to £500,000. This funding can be used to support local police forces with equipment and events to prevent crime in local hotspots.

Mike Gibbons, Liberal Democrat candidate for Orchard Park said: “I care deeply about our community here and recently people here have been telling me they haven’t been getting a fair deal.

“I’ve dedicated years of my life to setting up community facilities around Orchard Park and helping young people from right across North Hull get a better start in life. Our area deserves a strong local voice to fight for them.

“People I speak to in our part of HU6 feel it gets taken for granted by their Councillors, they usually only show up at election time – I want to change that this May. It’s time for someone to fight our area’s corner properly – and that’s what I’ll do.

“I’m proud to join the Liberal Democrat team which will be fighting for a cleaner, greener and safer Orchard Park.”

Liberal Democrat Leader Cllr Mike Ross added: “Mike is a real community champion and the one that Orchard Park really needs right now. Mike knows the issues facing the area and wants to work with the local community on tackling them head-on.

“That’s why there is no one better than Mike to take on the fight for the patch. For years, Councillors have neglected and ignored the area, it’s time for a change and that’s just what Mike Gibbons can bring.”
