Hull’s Headscarf Revolutionaries statue moves a step nearer thanks to charity walk

The group want to see the Headscarf Revolutionaries honoured with a permanent memorial in Hull

A group of fundraisers have quite literally made steps towards a statue of Hull’s Headscarf Revolutionaries after completing a charity walk.

The 13-mile walk saw the fundraisers start in Goxhill on the south bank, before crossing over the bridge and making their way to Hessle Road. Along the way, they stopped at each of the Headscarf Revolutionaries’ houses as a show of respect, before finishing their walk at the Hull Fishing Heritage Centre on Boulevard.

The group set off from Goxhill Square at 10am this morning (Friday, February 3), before making their way across the River Humber and heading to Springville Avenue in Hessle. They then visited Flinton Street and Coltman Street on Hessle Road, before arriving at the Heritage Centre shortly before 4pm.

The charity walk aimed to raise awareness of the accomplishments of Lillian Bilocca, Yvonne Blenkinsop, Christine Jensen and Mary Denness, with the ultimate goal being to erect a permanent statue in their honour. These revolutionaries took action after the Triple Trawler Tragedy of 1968 which cost the lives of 58 men, campaigning for tougher laws and ultimately changing the fishing industry for the better.

Organiser Ian Cuthbert said: “We’ve just walked all the way from Goxhill, we set off at 10am this morning and we’re aiming to raise money for a permanent statue of the Headscarf Revolutionaries. Just on the walk across, we’ve managed to raise over £100 in our donation boxes.

“People can help contribute towards the statue by purchasing one of our t-shirts designed by Clem Wear, as a percentage of each one sold goes towards the statue. You can find us under Headscarf Pride on Facebook, but the statue will soon have its own page where you can check for updates.

“Anyone wanting to get involved can apply to join our committee, so if you get in touch via our page I can sort that out for you. Today has been a great experience and I’d like to thank everyone for their donations and generosity.”
