The plant shop is expected to undergo a full transformation.
A plant shop in Whitefriargate has closed to make way for a brand-new rooftop terrace bar with “amazing” views of Hull Minster.
LW Plants & Design on 53 Whitefriargate in Hull’s Old Town has closed. Owners Wayne Graves and Lee Gleeson announced that they will be starting a new brand that will replace the plant shop.
They will open Calla which is expected to be a new jungle-themed rooftop terrace bar. Wayne told Hull Live last year they were hoping to turn the top floors of their plant shop into a restaurant and rooftop terrace bar.
Posting on the Calla Facebook page on Sunday, February 26 they said: “Well that’s it! LW is officially closed for business…may we introduce ‘Calla’ our new brand. We’ll no longer be a retail store but now a hospitality business in the coming weeks.
“We’d like to thank everyone who has supported us over the years and hope you’ll support our new venture.”
Fans of the plant shop left messages of support for Wayne and Lee. Other Facebook users commented on the post to wish the plant lovers good luck with their new business.
One woman said: “Best plant shop in Hull hands down, now for the best hospitality business in Hull.”
Another added: “Gutted you have closed the plant shop but good luck in your new venture.” A third commented: “Good luck both of you in your new venture.”
Wayne and Lee began selling plants at Trinity Market in 2019 and turned this business into LW Plants & Design just before lockdown. The plant shop also doubled up as a coffee shop and a cafe with a cosy seating area and tables.
The new rooftop terrace bar will offer “an amazing view of Hull Minster” according to Wayne when he spoke to Hull Live last year. He has not set a date for the opening of Calla yet but updates will be posted on the Facebook page.
