I recently finally tried out a Portuguese restaurant that has been on my radar for a while.
Brasa restaurant in Hull opened in Newland Avenue in August last year. This cosy dining spot has a traditional menu of grilled meats such as steak, Iberian pork, Brazilian sausage, chicken, and lamb chops.
There is also a fish menu with shrimp, cod, and sea bream. Vegetarians and vegans have the option of grilled mock meat served with side dishes like chips, rice, and grilled vegetables.
The wine list has an exciting mix of Portuguese wines, such as Casal Garcia Verde, a type of vinho verde (green wine) from the historic Minho Province. For beer drinkers, there are popular options such as Super Bock and Sagres.
There is also a cocktail menu with Portuguese concoctions such as Poncha da Madeira with Aguardente, lemon juice, orange juice, and honey. Other options include the traditional Brazilian cocktails Caipirinha and Batida Rosa.

For the food, we picked the steak with mushroom sauce (medium-rare) some vegan Espetada, and Rissois Mistos, a deep-fried breaded pastry filled with mild cheese and shaped like a half-moon.
I enjoyed the Rissois which were served with a sweet chilli dip and rocket salad. The vegan Espetada (faux meat cooked on skewers) were surprisingly tasty.

The steak was cooked exactly as requested with delicious chips on the side, making it a generous portion. In fact, we were pretty stuffed by the time we managed to eat everything.
A very tempting dessert menu offered Manjar de Coco (coconut pudding with plum sauce), Churros with vegan chocolate sauce, Pastel De Natas (traditional Portuguese custard tart), and Doce da Casa made from layered Maria biscuits, cream, and condensed milk.
Unfortunately, I didn’t have room for any of these tasty-sounding treats. However, I have a weakness for Pastel De Natas and would try those if I visited again.
